Emphasis on Equality and Inclusion on March 21, World Down Syndrome Day

Asst. Prof. Dr. Aylar KARGAR MOHAMMADINAZHAD, from Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, shared her views on the importance of equal opportunities, raising public awareness, and the role of proper nutrition during World Down Syndrome Day, observed annually on March 21.

World Down Syndrome Day aims to promote inclusion and highlight the rights of individuals with Down syndrome. The date, March 21, was chosen to symbolize the presence of three copies of the 21st chromosome—a characteristic of Down syndrome.

With proper education, supportive policies, and accessible social opportunities, individuals with Down syndrome can lead independent and fulfilling lives. Equal access to education, healthcare, and employment significantly enhances their quality of life. Moreover, eliminating social barriers and creating inclusive environments allow individuals to realize their full potential.

Providing early support and developmental programs plays a key role in shaping physical, cognitive, and social growth. Within this process, nutrition is a crucial element—a balanced diet supports the immune system, contributes to overall well-being, and positively influences development. Alongside nutrition, educational programs and rehabilitation efforts focusing on motor skills and individual talents help integrate individuals with Down syndrome more actively into social life.

Fostering social awareness and promoting rights-based approaches are essential to prevent discrimination and ensure participation. March 21 serves not only as a symbolic day of recognition but also as a call to build a more inclusive and conscious future for all.
