Protecting Hearing Health Throughout Life: The Importance of Noise Protection and Safe Headphone Use
Çağla Türk, Research Assistant at the Department of Audiology, Faculty of Health Sciences, emphasized that protecting hearing health throughout life is of great importance for both individuals and society. She highlighted the adverse effects of prolonged exposure to high-intensity noise, the importance of adopting safe listening habits when using headphones, and the role of regular hearing assessments in preventing hearing loss. Türk also stressed that early awareness and preventive approaches are essential for maintaining healthy hearing throughout life.
Hearing is one of the most essential senses, enabling individuals to communicate effectively, participate actively in social life, and maintain a high quality of life. However, increasing environmental noise, the widespread use of technological devices, and the habit of listening to music at high volumes have become major risk factors threatening hearing health. Fortunately, a significant proportion of hearing loss can be prevented through early awareness and appropriate preventive measures.
Noise Exposure Threatens Hearing Health
People are exposed to high levels of noise in many everyday environments, including traffic, public transportation, construction sites, concerts, and entertainment venues. Prolonged exposure to loud sounds can cause irreversible damage to the delicate sensory hair cells in the inner ear, increasing the risk of permanent hearing loss. Individuals working in noisy environments are therefore encouraged to use appropriate hearing protection devices and minimize their exposure to excessive noise whenever possible.
Adopting Safe Listening Habits When Using Headphones
With the widespread use of smartphones and portable audio devices, headphones have become an integral part of daily life. However, listening at high volumes for extended periods may negatively affect the auditory system. Experts recommend keeping the volume below approximately 60% of the device's maximum level and limiting continuous listening sessions to no more than 60 minutes. In addition, choosing headphones with active noise cancellation instead of increasing the volume in noisy environments and allowing the ears to rest regularly can help protect hearing health.
Regular Hearing Assessments Support Early Diagnosis
Regular audiological evaluations are among the most important steps in protecting hearing health. Individuals who are frequently exposed to loud noise, use headphones extensively, or belong to high-risk groups for hearing loss should undergo periodic hearing assessments. Early detection enables timely intervention and appropriate rehabilitation, helping to preserve communication abilities and overall quality of life.
Protecting Hearing Health Is Possible at Every Age
The Audiology Program of Istanbul Gelişim University places great importance on raising awareness about hearing health and educating the public on hearing conservation. Through education, scientific research, and community engagement, the program contributes to disseminating up-to-date knowledge and evidence-based practices that support lifelong hearing health.
A considerable proportion of hearing loss can be prevented through effective preventive strategies. Developing safe listening habits, taking appropriate protective measures in noisy environments, and undergoing regular hearing assessments play a vital role in maintaining healthy hearing throughout life.
