Visual Communication Design (Master) (Thesis)

Our Applied Courses and Opportunities as the Department of Communication and Design

Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF) Communication and Design Department Research Assistant Büşra Kamacıoğlu gave information about the applied courses of the department.

To educate students who can keep up with the needs of the information age, the Department of Communication and Design updated its curriculum in 2018 with the approval of the International accreditation board AQAS and focused on the "Multimedia" field in the curriculum. The Agency for Accreditation of Educational Programs and Quality Assurance (AQAS) is an independent non-profit organization made up of both academic associations and higher education institutions. Established in Germany in 2002, the institution evaluates the accreditation of joint and dual degree programs with international partner institutions. The accreditation program certifies that the education provided by the department complies with European standards and principles.

Our Communication and Design Department students receive basic art education with the "Basic Art Education I and II" courses in their first year and start using the program at the basic level with the "Visual Communication Design" course. In the Fall and Spring semesters of the 2nd and 3rd grades, we have 4 separate Multimedia courses "Multimedia I - Multimedia II - Multimedia II - Multimedia IV". The contents of multimedia courses are theoretical and practical. The purpose of the courses; To learn the construction phase of two-dimensional moving and immobile designs, to make designs suitable for the purpose, and to present their designs. Within the scope of these courses, practical training in design programs such as "Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Adobe After Effect" is given and students are supported with "experimental" projects to enable them to discover original design languages. In addition, with our "Sound Design and Applications" and "Digital Video Editing" courses, students also perform video studies.

Practice courses are held in the Mac lab and PC lab. At the end of the semester, a jury of 3-4 people is formed and our students present their work throughout the semester to the members of the jury along with their ideas and design stages. The aim here is for our students to gain the ability to present and defend the work they designed while they were still students. Application studies made with traditional methods or digital are also exhibited at the end of the semester.

The 12 elective courses in our curriculum allow students to receive an "interdisciplinary" education to become good communication designers. The development of students as “creative” individuals is supported by the activities organized within the university and the trips to art and design events held in the city.
