Next-Generation Curriculum from the Department of Visual Communication Design: AI, Branding, and a Digitally-Oriented Future

Istanbul Gelisim University’s Faculty of Fine Arts has undertaken another significant step toward educational transformation in line with the dynamics of the modern world. As of 2025, the department formerly known as “Communication and Design” will continue its academic and instructional activities under its new name: Visual Communication Design.

Curriculum Redesigned Around Artificial Intelligence, Digital Branding, and Sustainability

The Department of Visual Communication Design at Istanbul Gelisim University has launched a new, future-oriented curriculum in 2025, offering students a comprehensive learning experience that reflects the evolving needs of the creative industries. Developed through department board meetings and shaped by feedback from both internal and external stakeholders, the curriculum adopts a multidisciplinary approach grounded in technology, creativity, and strategy.

AI, Digital Production, and Brand-Focused Education

One of the most prominent features of the new curriculum is the integration of artificial intelligence in design and digital content production. Students are now able to take courses such as:

  • Artificial Intelligence: Theories and Applications

  • AI-Assisted Design Practices I & II

  • AI Workshop

  • The Future of AI and Visual Design

These courses provide a strong foundation in both theoretical concepts and hands-on project development.

In addition, courses like Digital Brand Communication, Corporate Identity Design, and Digital Marketing help students build competencies in strategic thinking and brand development across digital platforms.

Content Creation, Film, UX, and Sustainability Combined

The curriculum also includes key courses such as:

  • Digital Content Production on Platforms I & II

  • Short Film Production

  • Film Festivals and Distribution Practices

  • User Experience and Interface Design

These offerings allow students to gain expertise in creative media production. Simultaneously, courses such as Introduction to Sustainability and Social Responsibility and Sustainability encourage social consciousness and ethical awareness within the creative process.

A Solid Foundation for the Creators of Tomorrow

Department Chair Asst. Prof Dr. Aslı Kasar shared her insights on the curriculum renewal:

“Our goal is to equip students not just as designers, but as creative strategists, content producers, and active creators of the digital era. This curriculum is designed to prepare them powerfully for the future.”

With this renewed curriculum, the Department of Visual Communication Design aims to ensure that students meet sectoral demands and develop a competitive profile on both national and international platforms.
