The seminar, where lecturer and professional photographer Orhan Cem Çetin shared his SIGMA experiences, was held on March 25, 2023, with the participation of the students of the Art & Communication Design Club of the Department of Communication and Design under the leadership of Lecturer Ahmet Bikic. Within the scope of the seminar, lens properties, factors affecting depth of field, and macro photography examples were discussed.
“I am looking for ways to add to the photo's inherent shortcomings”
Orhan Cem Çetin stated that he mainly carries out optical-based works and said that he sought ways to add to it with his subjective touches the inherent shortcomings of photography, such as the simple and meaningless nature of photography, recording only the appearance component of a period as a picture, and being a representation tool without smell, sound, and volume... He stated that he often makes use of factors such as lens, clarity, and depth of field, which is the subject of the seminar, in his effort to construct a subjective meaning for photography.
Çetin expressed the meaning-making processes of photography by saying, “Attribution of certain meanings to the photograph by the person who produces it, not the viewer, requires just as complex processes as making the photograph a carrier, and it is very difficult, almost impossible to create clear expressions.” Çetin mentioned that he pushed the technical possibilities of photography by playing games with scales and lenses in his works and advised the students to do a similar search.
At the seminar, students also received practical training on the camera. Afterward, a short question and answer session was held.
We would like to thank Lecturer Ahmet Bikic, who led Orhan Cem Çetin's seminar tour organized by SIGMA Turkey, and congratulate our students for their participation in the seminar.
