First of all, hello Fatih Kerem, how are you? Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Hello, thank you, I'm fine. I am Fatih Kerem. I am a 3rd year student at the Department of Communication and Design. I am actively working in outdoor advertising and as a freelance graphic designer.

You have applied to the 2209-A University Students Research Projects Support Program and your project has been accepted. Can you tell us how your application process went?
I heard that TÜBİTAK has such project processes. My teacher Büşra explained all the details of the process to me. Thanks to you, I gained more knowledge. Then, together with my teacher Büşra, we started to search for a topic. We started thinking about earthquakes because we wanted to create a project that addresses the needs of society and people. We realized that the mobile applications used during the earthquake were not sufficient in terms of design and wanted to address this issue. After academic research and mobile application reviews, we prepared our documents and completed our application.
-
What do you plan to do within the scope of the project?
Within the scope of the project, we will examine the user interfaces of mobile applications used in the field of Disaster Management in Turkey and design a new alternative interface. There are applications with many different functions in this regard. However, many of them have shortcomings according to design principles. We will focus on these shortcomings and design an alternative interface that appeals to every user. Then we will turn it into a scientific publication.

Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for your friends?
I recommend my friends to follow this type of project support. Because I believe that these projects will be very good references for us in the coming years. All our professors, especially Büşra, were very supportive of my involvement in the project process. My friends can apply to all professors in the faculty during such processes.

You have applied to the 2209-A University Students Research Projects Support Program and your project has been accepted. Can you tell us about your application process?
We gathered information about the TÜBİTAK 2209-A University Student Research Projects Support Program. When determining the topic, we took into account our interests and the purpose of the program. Collaborating with our advisor, Res. Asst. Bengisu Cansever, we defined the details and objectives of the project. With our advisor's guidance, we completed the application process and prepared the necessary documents properly. The experiences we gained during this process will assist us in our future research endeavors.
-
What do you plan to do within the scope of the project?
In our project, we are conducting research on changing gender stereotype discourses in advertisements. We started our research by choosing the Atasay brand, which is a well-established store. We research the brand's advertisements published since its establishment and examine how gender roles are used. We analyze whether the advertisements we examine were actually written under the pressure of society or with a free thought. Then, we think about how we can make the ads we analyzed better from our own perspective and what mistakes there are in these ads and transfer this to our project.
-
Do you have any suggestions or advice for your friends?
Certainly, here are some suggestions for our friends regarding the TÜBİTAK project:
-
They can choose a topic in their area of interest to conduct a more focused and productive research process.
-
Collaborating with the advisors from our school would be more beneficial. Working with an advisor enhances the success of the project. Good communication and support lead to great outcomes.
-
Maintaining discipline is one of the most important aspects. Setting up a project plan and working consistently helps them manage their time effectively
As IGU FFA, we congratulate our students who are entitled to receive support within the scope of TÜBİTAK 2209-A University Students Research Projects Support Program and our research assistants who undertook the academic consultancy of the project.
