Melis Boyacı, Head of Communication and Design Department at Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF), attended the talk titled "The Future of Fine Arts Departments After the Pandemic" held by Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) Continuing Education Center (CEC).

The event, moderated by Continuing Education Center (SEM) Manager Emel Tozlu Öztay, started at 13:30. After mentioning the subject of the conversation held on behalf of the SEM center, the floor was given to Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts Prof. Dr. Şükran Güzin Ilıcak Aydınalp.

Aydınalp said, “People discovered their creativity and talents during their stay at home. The interest and love of families and students in art increased. Culture, art, and design emerged as a unifying effect because they provided spiritual motivation. When we look at the fine arts, the art continued, but this continuity evolved. Exhibitions, auctions, art galleries, and fairs started to be held online. Online tours and film archives started to be opened in museums. Therefore, the dimension of art has shifted to online platforms. Subsequently, the concept of “Digital Art” emerged. Many artists have started to produce completely digital works. Fine Arts departments will be very popular and active after the pandemic, and students will be more active.” He left the floor to the heads of departments.

Head of Communication and Design Department asst. Prof. Dr. Melis BOYACI expressed her thoughts:

“Human exists through communication and our existence in society develops through communication. With the effects of the pandemic, all our habits were taken home and all our activities began to take place at home. Previously, there were video calls with various technologies such as Skype and Whatsapp. The pandemic and developing technologies in the communication sector have led to deeper diversification, the emergence of new branches, and even some branches to come to the fore.

Melis Boyacı continued her words by emphasizing the importance of social media:

“Social media channels have entered our lives, but with the pandemic period, they have started to be used much more. The use of channels such as Youtube, İnsatgram, and Netflix is at the top of the last evaluation surveys. Product marketing, content production, and online courses are organized through these channels in the Internet environment, and there has been a serious digital market area in social media. Marketing, especially through Youtube and Instagram, is very common, other social media channels have also searched for markets.

This has changed the way we communicate with products. With 5G, artificial intelligence, and digital marketing, the way we process advertising has been transformed. Interactivity and Augmented Reality technologies started to be used. Alternative business sectors have emerged in the field of communication. Content editing has gained importance. Along with all this, a very wide field of work for students and areas where they can show their creativity and take an active role in all branches, as well as improve themselves, have begun to emerge. For our students to progress in these areas and improve themselves, they need to be interested in coding, animation, and group work. In short, with the pandemic, the communication sector has expanded considerably.”
