This meeting, conducted on March 8, 2025, via Google Meet, brought together sector representatives and academics to discuss updates to the curriculum and better alignment with industry needs.
The meeting was attended by Ahmet Bikiç (Media Arketip) from the media sector and Ezgi Kasar (Happy People), an expert in advertising and marketing. The event began with an opening speech by Asst. Prof. Aslı Kasar, Head of the Communication and Design Department. Interactive discussions were held on updating the curriculum to meet contemporary requirements, structuring digital media education in line with industry expectations, and strengthening design-focused course content.
One of the key topics was the proposal to rename the department as "Visual Communication Design." Industry representatives emphasized that this change would expand students' career opportunities and provide an education more aligned with sectoral demands. Additionally, the integration of artificial intelligence, advertising, brand management, and design-focused content into the curriculum was highlighted.
In this context, it was emphasized that the Design Studies II course should be supported with agency briefs to establish a stronger connection with the industry. This aims to ensure that students gain real project experience and are better prepared for the professional world. Moreover, there was a consensus on making advertising copywriting a mandatory course.
To keep pace with the digital age, enhancing education in digital media and social media management was discussed. Industry professionals stressed the importance of students gaining more expertise in social media platform management, content creation, and digital marketing strategies.
Furthermore, a "Artificial Intelligence and Design" workshop in collaboration with Happy People in May 2025 was planned. This workshop will provide students with an opportunity to experience the role of artificial intelligence in design processes and encourage them to adapt to emerging technologies in the industry.
The meeting also addressed investigating the reasons for low enrollment and developing programs that align with student demands. It was emphasized that fostering creative thinking processes, equipping students with industry-relevant skills, and adapting to contemporary design trends require closer collaboration between the academic faculty and industry representatives.
Following this crucial meeting, it was decided that similar events would be organized to strengthen the collaboration between İGÜ's Communication and Design Department and industry representatives, ensuring students are better prepared for professional life. By reinforcing academic and industry cooperation, the goal is to cultivate more competitive and well-equipped individuals in the future.
