Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF), Communication and Design Department Research Assistant Ayten Bengisu Cansever's article titled “Examination Of The Economy News In The Central  Media In Turkey Within The Context Of Neoliberal  Governmentality: The Case Of ‘Hürriyet’ And ‘Sabah’" published in the 11th issue of Etkileşim Journal indexed by TrDizin. In the article, which is freely accessible on the internet, the issues that the central news media has moved away from the public social responsibility understanding of journalism, lost its independence due to its ties with power relations, and reproduced the neoliberal governmentality discourse came to the fore.

The summary of the article is as follows:

This study aims to discuss the reflections of neoliberal governmentality on economic news in the central media of Turkey. In line with this purpose, Hürriyet and  Sabah newspapers, which are among the central news media, were chosen as samples. In this context, the reason why Hürriyet and Sabah newspapers were preferred in the study is that the ideological tendencies of these two newspapers are in the ‘central media’ position. In addition, it has been taken into account that these two newspapers have high circulation numbers in the central news media and that they are among the top five most visited news sites according to the data obtained. Therefore, it was deemed appropriate to choose these two newspapers when evaluated in terms of both circulation and website traffic. The reflection of neoliberal governmentality in economic news in these two newspapers has been analyzed through the economic news published between February 2022 and March 2022, when the economic agenda fluctuated in Turkey and various discussions reached their peak. The economic news selected in the study was analyzed using the mixed method. In this direction, while economic news is analyzed by Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis method, quantitative content analysis is also used. Economy news between the relevant dates was found by searching the web pages of Sabah and Hürriyet newspapers with the keywords “competition”, “investment”, “privatization”, “capital”, “enterprise” and “poverty”. The prominent issues, word choices, themes, topic titles, and actors in the news texts that are the subject of analysis are discussed from a critical political economy perspective. As a result, it was concluded in the study that the central news media moved away from the public social responsibility understanding of journalism, lost its independence due to its ties with power relations, and reproduced the neoliberal governmentality discourse.
