Communication and Design Department Social Responsibility Project “SOZOP”

Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF) Communication and Design Department students started to work on social media on the theme of digital addiction and book reading habits under the name of “Social Necessity Project (SOZOP)”.

There are numerous benefits that technology brings to human life. However, a person's loss of control over the use of technology, and excessive and unlimited use of technology can cause serious harm. It is observed that as the duration of technology use increases, the thought processes of children and young people deteriorate, interpersonal sensitivities decrease, the general health level decreases, and obsessive, depressive, anxious, hostile, phobic, and paranoid thoughts increase. It has been determined that children who use the internet intensively and spend their time with computer games have a significant decline in their social development, low self-confidence, and high levels of social anxiety and aggression. Studies have revealed that children and young people who spend a lot of time on the Internet are increasingly lonely and have difficulties in establishing face-to-face relationships.

In this context, Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (GSF) Communication and Design Department students started to implement a social responsibility project on the theme of digital addiction and book reading habits under the name of “Social Compulsion Project (SOZOP)”. The goal of the project; To share both entertaining and informative posts and videos on the "Instagram" application, which is one of the social media channels, to inform especially the young generation about technology addiction. These posts will include content that will raise awareness with works such as podcasts, promotional posters, online interviews, reaction videos, debates, behind-the-scenes, and surveys for the next topic.

In this context, SOZOP started sharing in February. Students involved in the project "Why did they set out with the name of social necessity?" and "How does it feel to take part in the project":

“For me, it's a situation that people need to know inwardly and expect encouragement to do, that our responsibilities are an obligation, that I want every person to realize. In my eyes, the Social Necessity Project is a project that is willing to prune the perception of 'whether it is done or not'. I am proud to be a part of this project.” HANDE PALA

“We are together to raise awareness of the 'necessary' in society. As we stated in our manifesto with the team I am in, we plan to shift this from a 'charity work' norm and reveal that it is a 'social necessity'.” MELEK GULSEN

“In the globalizing world, social responsibilities are now a social obligation for everyone. For me, this should be the first step to bringing awareness. I am excited to walk this path with SOZOP.” MELIKE SOAP

“The changing world brings with it our changed negligence. From time to time, we all feel compelled to choose between going with the flow or taking the reins. SOZOP is a project that has the potential to be a pioneer in society and spread this utilitarianism from hand to hand in a young and dynamic way while being aware of our changing negligence. It is an honor for me to take part in this project.” FIRDEVS GULŞAHIN

“We can say that the question of what is SOZOP means being sensitive to social problems and contributing to their solutions.” RESAT UZUNER

“It is to raise awareness of our social problems and to mirror our obligations. We are together to put an end to social corruption. It's exciting to be a part of SOZOP.” ENES DALGIÇ
