Museum Tours on 19 May Youth and Sports Day

We colored the 19th of May Youth and Sports Day with our trips to the National Palaces Painting Museum and the Sakıp Sabancı Museum as part of the History of Art and Design lesson.
Our first stop is the National Palaces Painting Museum.

The exhibition area, where part of the "Heir's Office" section of the Dolmabahçe Palace was converted into a museum, was quite impressive. The museum leaves a pleasant and informative impression on the visitors not only with its works but also with its historical structure. Especially the exterior facades and ceiling decorations of the building reflect the Baroque and Rococo effective image world of the 19th century Westernization period Ottoman architecture. Again, in accordance with the art culture of the Westernization period, a collection of paintings reaching gigantic dimensions is presented to us. The works generally deal with themes in the classical figurative style of 19th century Istanbul and foreign painters. In addition, there are also paintings brought from Europe and collections of Republican period painters in the museum.

We toured the museum step by step with the impressions and comments of our students. Although we can hardly see the Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Expressionist styles here, which broke new ground in the 19th century European painting culture, we studied romantic, realist and orientalist paintings for a long time. For example, we talked about the court painter Fausto Zonaro's use of light in an almost hyperrealist style besides his realism. Again, we tried to read the characteristics of the romanticism movement in the paintings of Russian Romantic Painter Ivan Konstaninovic Aivazovsky. We had the opportunity to examine the portraits of Ottoman sultans made in the workshop of Veronese, one of the famous painters of the Renaissance. We watched with admiration the success of Prince Painter Abdülmecid Efendi from the Ottoman dynasty and Osman Hamdi Bey's achievements in catching the era.
Our Second Stop: Sakıp Sabancı Museum, David Hockney Exhibition

Leaving the Dolmabahçe Palace and walking to Beşiktaş, we made a cross section in memory and reached the 16th century in the courtyard of Mimar Sinan Mosque. With a short impression, we are now included in the memory of this 16th century building. Then we took the coastal road to the Sakıp Sabancı Museum. We encountered an impressive garden, landscape and residence. The residence, which was built in 1925, was started to be used by the Sabancı family in 1951. In 2002, it was converted into a museum with its modern additions and opened to visitors with its collections and items.
First, we toured the residence. We examined the memories of a full life, from classical furniture to Persian rugs. We talked about the aesthetic values in calligraphy and old book collections. On the stairs leading to the upper floor, we came across a wonderful work by Fausto Zonaro. After the personal collections, we went down to the gallery floors and saw the artist's works in detail in the exhibition "The Extraordinary World of the Prince: Abdülmecid Efendi", which is about the works of Abdülmecid Efendi, whom we first met at a National Palaces Painting Museum.

“Pop Art” was the last lesson of our one-year History of Art and Design course. Again, the experience of David Hockney, one of the important names of this movement, “David Hockney: The Coming of Spring, Normandy, 2020” exhibition here became a pre-activity of our lesson. First, we started to tour the exhibition by giving information about Pop Art. After watching the videos of the artist, we experienced the works. This exhibition of Hockney of the artist's paintings on the Ipad. We shared our impressions on digital art and its aesthetic value.
After leaving the Sakıp Sabancı Museum, we had a tired coffee in Sarıyer. While sipping our coffees, we evaluated our long art-filled trip. It's been a very productive day. We talked a lot about art, shared a lot of ideas. We experienced our Art and Design History course on site. It was good sharing for all of us and we created an unforgettable memory. Of course, we have summer trips and plenty of travel plans for the next year…

We wish to increase the number of our trips next year and learn more and share more together...
