A Guide to Academia for Young People – Interview with Research Assistant Ayten Bengisu Cansever Bayhan

As the Faculty of Fine Arts at Istanbul Gelişim University, we conducted an insightful interview providing important tips on the journey of academia. We spoke with Research Assistant Ayten Bengisu Cansever Bayhan about the academic career path, the challenges faced, and advice for young scholars.

What are the essential skills and competencies needed to become an academic?

Academia is a profession centered on accessing and producing knowledge. Therefore, analytical thinking skills, a critical perspective, and curiosity for research are among the most important competencies. To succeed in academic life, one must be disciplined and patient. Additionally, having well-developed academic writing and presentation skills allows you to express your work effectively. Being open to innovation and learning is one of the most critical elements that make academic progress sustainable.

What are the fundamental stages of becoming an academic in Turkey?

The academic career process consists of several key stages. First, a person considering an academic career must complete undergraduate education. Then, they should be accepted into a thesis-based master’s program to gain research experience. After completing a master’s degree, the PhD process begins. A PhD is one of the most crucial stages for an academic to deepen their expertise and contribute to science. For those who want to advance in academia, positions such as research assistant, assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor are available. Publishing research, participating in projects, and attending academic events play a significant role in academic progress.

What are the biggest challenges in the academic journey? How can they be overcome?

Academia is a journey that requires discipline and dedication. One of the biggest challenges is time management. Balancing academic work, teaching, research, and publishing processes is essential. The pressure to publish and the competitive nature of academia are also unavoidable aspects of this path. To cope with these challenges, it is crucial to work in a planned and systematic manner. Additionally, building an academic network, collaborating with other academics, and continuously improving oneself can make the process easier.

How competitive is academic life? What advice do you have for aspiring academics?

Academic life is highly competitive, especially at the international level. Scientific productivity is one of the main criteria for academic advancement, requiring constant research, publishing, and participation in projects. However, instead of viewing this process as a race, it is important to see it as an opportunity for personal and professional development. My advice to aspiring academics is to deepen their expertise while remaining open to interdisciplinary work. To avoid getting lost in academic competition, focus on individual goals and establish a sustainable work system.

What steps should one take to become a research assistant? How does the process work?

To become a research assistant, candidates must first obtain high scores on the ALES (Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam) and a foreign language exam (YÖKDİL or YDS). Universities periodically announce research assistant job postings, which are published in the Official Gazette, on the Higher Education Council (YÖK) website, and on university announcement pages. After applications are reviewed, candidates may be required to take written or oral exams. Research assistantship is the first step in an academic career, and it is crucial to make the most of this period by engaging in research and academic development.

How important is specialization in academia? What advice do you have for aspiring academics?

Specializing in a specific field strengthens your position in academia and clarifies your academic identity. However, it is also important not to become too narrowly focused and to develop an interdisciplinary perspective. Research that integrates different perspectives tends to be more innovative and impactful. My advice to young academics is to carefully choose their area of specialization and, while deepening their expertise, also interact with other scientific disciplines.

How does the academic publishing process work? How does publishing affect an academic career?

Publishing research is one of the most essential aspects of an academic career. To publish an article, one must first conduct strong research, analyze data, and prepare a manuscript following academic writing guidelines. Since the publishing process usually involves peer review, it is important to submit a well-prepared study. Academic publications are a key criterion for career advancement, so maintaining consistent and high-quality research output provides a significant advantage.

What is your perspective on interdisciplinary studies? How important is it to combine different fields in academic research?

Interdisciplinary studies are becoming increasingly important in academia. To find solutions to today’s complex problems, we need research that brings together different disciplines. For example, in the field of communication design, integrating perspectives from sociology, psychology, and digital technologies makes research more comprehensive and impactful. Young academics who embrace interdisciplinary approaches gain a significant advantage in their careers.

What advice do you have for young people considering an academic career but feeling uncertain?

Academia is a long-term journey that requires patience and dedication. If you truly enjoy research, learning, and teaching, an academic career can be incredibly fulfilling. However, it is crucial to be aware that the academic path is challenging and requires commitment. My advice to those who are uncertain is to reach out to academics, learn more about the profession, observe academic work, and explore their own areas of interest. If you are passionate about the pursuit of knowledge, then academia may be the right path for you.
