Exciting Discovery in Aizanoi Ancient City

During the excavations carried out in the ancient city of Aizanoi in the Çavdarhisar district of Kütahya, the heads of the statues of Aphrodite and Dionysus were unearthed.

A 50 cm high Aphrodite statue head and a 45 cm high Dionysos statue head were found in the ongoing excavations in the Kocaçay deposit within the borders of the Ancient City of Aizanoi, which is 50 km away from the city center of Kütahya and included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2012.

Excavation Director Prof. Dr. Gökhan Coşkun stated that this discovery was a pleasing development for the excavation team, since in previous studies, only the bodies of the statues were found and no head parts were found. Coşkun also noted that these statue heads gave information about the belief system in the Roman Period, and pointed out that the findings revealed that a sculpture workshop might be located in this region.
