Title: Human Interest: On Usury
Abstract:
This paper offers a new reading of the early modern debate on usury from Shakespeare to Bentham. To summarize, I will argue that what is at stake in the supposed “repeal” of the ancient prohibition against usury is the production of a new theory of the subject as not simply “human capital” (Foucault) but as what I want to call “human interest”. In conclusion, I argue that the modern indebted subject is
not merely permitted but naturally and rationally compelled to borrow and lend at interest.
