UN Special Rapporteur calls for ‘urgent and decisive’ action to support people of Myanmar

Tom Andrews, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, urged the UN Security Council to refer Myanmar's situation to the International Criminal Court to investigate and prosecute crimes committed after the coup on 1 February, as well as those committed against ethnic groups in previous years. Emphasizing the disproportionate force used by the military junta on peaceful protesters that caused the loss of many civilian lives, Andrews drew attention to the importance of decisive and urgent support of the international community. He asked Myanmar's humanitarian and development donors for working directly with local civil society and aid organizations, rather than relying on centralized institutions now dominated by the junta. Also, Andrews has called on the UN Security Council to take “decisive and unified action” against leaders of Myanmar's military coup, including an arms embargo and targeted sanctions.
