UN Climate Report a 'Red Alert' For the Planet: Guterres

The recent report prepared by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) exposes the urgent need for a comprehensive climate plan for the planet. The level of action seems to be far from expected in order to limit climate change to 1.5 degrees and reach Paris Agreement goals.

According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres who considers the UN climate report as a “red alert” for the planet, the year 2021 will be crucial to meet these goals. This climate agenda which aims to decrease global emission dramatically is also important for the next Conference of its Parties (COP26) that will be held in November 2021 in Glasgow. Guterres stressed on the importance of concrete action against the global green house gas emissions. At this point, Patricia Espinosa, UNFCCC Executive Secretary warns that the UN climate report depicts only a part of the reality and does not reflect a full picture about the situation because only 75 Parties to the Framework Convention shared information about their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to global green house gas emissions. This constitutes in fact an important objective for the second report which is planned to be released before the COP26.
