We are, with Great Pleasure, Welcoming Prof. Dr. Banu Demir Pakel from the University of Oxford on the Occation of Spring Talks!

The Spring Talks series, successfully organized for several semesters by the Department of Economics and Finance at Istanbul Gelisim University and followed with great interest in academic circles, continues in the spring semester of 2026 with strong themes and distinguished guests. In the second event of the series, which aims to enhance the department’s academic interaction and bring students and researchers together with current fields of discussion, Prof. Dr. Banu Demir Pakel from the University of Oxford will be the guest speaker.

Within this scope, the event titled “Trade Around Geopolitics” will comprehensively address the effects of political and economic developments on international trade at the global level. In recent years, geopolitical tensions, regional conflicts, supply chain disruptions, protectionist tendencies, and transformations in trade policies have become increasingly visible in the world economy, affecting not only interstate relations but also the production, investment, and market strategies of firms. The event aims to evaluate this multilayered transformation from the perspective of international trade.

The participation of Prof. Dr. Banu Demir Pakel from such a globally prestigious institution as the University of Oxford further strengthens the academic quality of the program. Known for her work in international economics, trade policies, and global economic relations, Prof. Dr. Pakel will provide participants with the opportunity to assess current global developments within a broader and more analytical framework. The event will not only focus on a specific topic, but will also offer participants the chance to closely follow contemporary debates in international economics.

The Spring Talks series organized by the Department of Economics and Finance has, for several semesters, provided an important academic meeting ground for students, academics, and all those interested in the field. Growing stronger with each new event, this series has made significant contributions to the academic visibility of the department through its structure that encourages interdisciplinary thinking, its choice of topics centered on current issues, and its highly competent speakers. In this respect, Spring Talks is not only a series of events, but also an academic platform that reflects the intellectual dynamism of the department and moves forward with strong steps toward becoming a tradition.

The event will be moderated by Assist. Dr. Mehmet Saya from the Department of Economics and Finance at Istanbul Gelisim University. Throughout the program, the multidimensional interaction between geopolitical developments and trade relations will be evaluated from an academic perspective, and participants will have the opportunity to address both the theoretical and current dimensions of the topic together. In this sense, the event offers important content especially for students and researchers interested in economics, finance, international trade, and political economy.

The online program will be open to all participants. The event aims to expand academic knowledge sharing and support interaction among different institutions.
The event titled Department of Economics and Finance Spring Talks 2: Trade Around Geopolitics will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 15:30 via Google Meet.
