 WINTER ACADEMY 2022- INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND VACCINES


Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) Department of Child Development faculty member Assist. Prof. Dr. Nurten ELKİN delivered an online course on "COMMUNICABLE DISEASES AND VACCINES" for High School students between 11.30 and 12.30 on 01.02.2022 within the scope of the WINTER ACADEMY program.


ELKİN started her speech by describing health and disease. Then, she emphasized the concept of public health, the importance and necessity of preventive health services. In the continuation of the course, the protective measures to be taken for the individual and the environment, especially the measures to be taken for the individual; the control of infectious diseases emphasized the importance of vaccination.

In the continuation of her speech; definition of contagious disease, the chain of infection, the concepts of infectious disease and carrier, the precautions to be taken to break the chain of infection, the negative consequences of communicable diseases on public health, the precautions to be taken before and after the outbreak of the contagious disease, the concepts of filiation and quarantine, and the relationship between nutrition and contagious disease. She talked about the relationship between hand hygiene and contagious disease, vaccine types, the importance of immunization against childhood diseases with infancy and childhood vaccination, and the cold chain concepts, undesirable side effects after vaccination.

ELKIN shared the information that there is an infectious disease, epidemic that affects the whole world during the pandemic we are in, and firstly the importance and necessity of the vaccine, and then how important social distance, hand hygiene and the use of the right mask are in the fight against the epidemic.
