The European Commission has announced plans to reduce greenhouse gases in the transport sector by 90% by 2050 to meet the goals of the European Green Deal.
For aviation, the goal is to make Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) the main fuel type, considered "technologically ready" to replace fossil fuels. The new rule will force airlines to mix fossil fuels with SAFs by 2030. Free emission permits for air carriers will disappear after 2026 and a fossil fuel tax will be introduced gradually.
Changes in the aviation industry could lead to higher prices for airline tickets. "Under a few market-based measures, the unilateral and double pricing of CO2 will be counterproductive economically," the industry group "Airlines for Europe" said.
