 Sustainable and Nutritionally Responsive Food Systems: A Planetary Frontiers Approach


2020/21 Mercator-IPC Researcher Özge Geyik's analysis titled "Sustainable and Nutritionally Responsive Food Systems: A Planetary Limits Approach" has been published.


Nutrition is transsectoral and therefore requires multi-sectoral action. On the way to the United Nations Food Systems Summit, which will take place for the first time in September 2021 (at time of writing), actors from NGOs, governments and the private sector are working together to facilitate discussions on food systems transformation. Globally, food systems fail to address the various roles outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals. The cost of the triple burden of undernutrition (the coexistence of hunger, overnutrition, and latent hunger) is increasing worldwide. At the same time, food systems activities put enormous pressure on many earth system processes, such as climate, soil, clean water systems, as well as biochemical cycles and biosphere integrity. Fair, sustainable and healthy food environments are prerequisites for ensuring food and nutrition security. The transformation of food systems is therefore essential to ensure accessible and nutritious food for all, within the boundaries of the planet.
